The U.S. has more than 305 million people, about 4.5% of world population. Seniors age 65 and older population is about 12% (36-37 million) of total U.S. population. According to 2004 Census Data, the folowing are important figures for seniors population (age 65 and older).

States which have most seniors:

California with 3.8 million

Florida with 2.9 million

New York with 2.5 million

Texas with 2.2 million

Highest seniors population increase in 2004:

California added 57,000

Texas added 37,000

Florida added 32,000

States with highest seniors percentage in relation to general population: (national figure is 12%):

Florida had 16.8 %

West Virginia had 15.3 %

Pennsylvania had 15.3 %

States with highest seniors migration increase from 2003 to 2004:

Nevada increased 4.2 %

Alaska increased 3.8 %

According to the US News & World Report, November 2008, Approximately 3.8 million seniors reside in some type of aging services facility, according to the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. They live in roughly 17,000 nursing homes, 39,500 assisted-living facilities, 2,250 continuing care retirement communities, and other senior housing units.
